How Do I Know If My Child Needs Braces? Signs to Watch For

A few common signs suggest your child may benefit from braces: visibly crowded or gapped teeth, baby teeth that fall out unusually early or late, ongoing mouth breathing or thumb-sucking past the toddler years, and a bite that looks noticeably overlapped, underbitten, or crossed. None of these signs mean treatment is automatically needed, but they’re worth having evaluated. As we cover in our guide to what age kids should first see an orthodontist, the best next step is simply booking an evaluation so a professional can take a closer look.

Crowded or Gapped Teeth

If your child’s teeth look bunched together, twisted, or overlapping, or if there are noticeable gaps between them, that’s often one of the more visible early signs. Crowding tends to become more apparent as permanent teeth come in, since there may not be quite enough room in the jaw for all of them to line up evenly. You might notice teeth coming in rotated, overlapping a neighboring tooth, or erupting at an odd angle — all worth mentioning to your dentist or orthodontist even if it seems minor at first.

Speech or Chewing Difficulties

Some bite and alignment issues can subtly affect how a child chews food or pronounces certain sounds. If you’ve noticed your child favoring one side while chewing, taking unusually long to eat, or struggling with certain speech sounds without another clear explanation, it’s worth mentioning at an orthodontic evaluation alongside any other signs you’ve noticed.

Baby Teeth Lost Too Early or Too Late

Baby teeth act as placeholders for the permanent teeth coming in behind them. When a baby tooth is lost well before or well after it typically should be, it can affect how much space is available for the permanent tooth, sometimes contributing to crowding or spacing issues later.

Mouth Breathing or Prolonged Thumb-Sucking

Habits like chronic mouth breathing or thumb-sucking that continues past the toddler years can influence how the jaw and palate develop over time, sometimes contributing to a narrow palate or bite issues. If either habit is sticking around longer than expected, it’s worth mentioning at your child’s next dental or orthodontic visit.

Overbite, Underbite, or Crossbite Signs

A bite that looks significantly overlapped (overbite), where the lower teeth sit noticeably ahead of the upper teeth (underbite), or where the upper and lower teeth don’t line up evenly from side to side (crossbite) are all signs worth having evaluated. These bite patterns can sometimes affect chewing, speech, or jaw comfort as your child grows. A crossbite in particular is worth having looked at sooner rather than later, since jaw growth can make correction more involved the longer it’s left unaddressed.

How We Evaluate These Signs

When you bring your child in for an evaluation, our team doesn’t just glance and guess. We use our iTero digital scanner to get a precise, detailed model of your child’s teeth and bite, which Dr. Aliu reviews alongside a hands-on exam. That combination lets her tell you with confidence whether what you’re noticing is a genuine concern, something to simply keep an eye on, or nothing to worry about at all.

What to Do If You Spot These Signs

None of these signs mean your child definitely needs braces — many kids show one or two of them and turn out not to need treatment for years, if at all. What they do mean is that it’s a good time to book an orthodontic evaluation. Our team will use our iTero digital scanner to get a clear picture of your child’s bite and growth pattern and let you know honestly whether treatment is recommended now, later, or not at all. You can find more common questions answered in our braces FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tell on my own if my child needs braces?

You can often spot visible signs like crowding or an obvious bite mismatch, but only an orthodontic evaluation can tell you for sure whether treatment is needed and when.

Is thumb-sucking always a problem?

Not necessarily — most toddlers suck their thumbs, and it’s usually not a concern at that age. It becomes more worth watching if the habit continues well past early childhood.

My child has a gap between their front teeth. Is that a problem?

Not always — some gaps close naturally as more permanent teeth come in. An evaluation can tell you whether a specific gap is likely to close on its own or needs attention.

Should I wait until all my child’s adult teeth come in before getting them checked?

No — many bite and growth issues are actually easier to address earlier, which is part of why an evaluation around age 7 is generally recommended rather than waiting for every adult tooth to erupt.

My child doesn’t have any of these signs. Do they still need an evaluation?

Yes — a first evaluation is worthwhile even without obvious signs, since some issues are easier for a trained eye to catch than for a parent to notice at home.

Is it normal for my child’s teeth to look a little crooked as adult teeth come in?

Some temporary crowding or crooked-looking teeth during the transition from baby to adult teeth can be completely normal. An evaluation can help you tell the difference between a phase that will resolve on its own and something worth monitoring or treating.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, our team is happy to take a look. Schedule a consultation with Elite Orthodontics today.
