Self-Ligating vs. Traditional Braces: What’s the Difference?

Braces and Invisalign orthodontic care at Elite Orthodontics in Bowie, MD, Washington, DC & Glenn Dale
  • Elite Orthodontics
  • August 24, 2026

Both self-ligating and traditional braces are proven, effective ways to straighten teeth, and both remain popular options for teens at Elite Orthodontics. The main difference between self-ligating and traditional braces is how the archwire attaches to each bracket: self-ligating brackets use a small built-in sliding door to hold the wire in place, while traditional brackets rely on tiny elastic ties. That difference affects friction, cleaning, and often how quickly adjustment visits go. We touched on this briefly in our guide to the different types of braces available today — here, we’ll go deeper on how the two options actually compare.

How Each Mechanism Works

Traditional braces use steel brackets bonded to each tooth, with a metal archwire threaded through them and small elastic ties (or metal ligatures) holding the wire snugly in the bracket. Self-ligating braces use brackets with a built-in clip or sliding door instead of an elastic tie, so the archwire can move through the bracket with far less friction. Both approaches move teeth using the same basic principle — steady, controlled pressure over time — just with a different mechanism for holding the wire in place.

This distinction matters more than it might seem, since the amount of friction between the wire and bracket affects how easily the archwire can slide and adjust as teeth shift. Self-ligating brackets were specifically engineered to reduce that friction, which is where most of their day-to-day differences come from.

Comfort and Friction Differences

Because self-ligating brackets reduce friction between the wire and bracket, some patients find the day-to-day feel slightly more comfortable, particularly as the wire slides more freely during tooth movement. Traditional braces are still very well tolerated by the vast majority of patients — the elastic ties simply create a bit more friction against the wire. Most patients with either type experience some soreness for a day or two after an adjustment as teeth respond to fresh pressure, which is normal and typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief if needed.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Self-ligating brackets tend to be easier to keep clean since there’s no elastic tie for food and plaque to collect around. With traditional braces, it’s especially important to take a little extra time brushing and flossing around each tie and bracket to avoid buildup. Both options require consistent oral hygiene throughout treatment — self-ligating brackets just remove one more spot where debris likes to hide. That said, neither option is truly low-maintenance; both still require careful brushing around every bracket and flossing under the archwire to keep gums and teeth healthy throughout treatment, ideally with a little extra time built into your daily routine.

Appointment Frequency and Speed

Traditional braces typically require the ties to be replaced at each adjustment visit, which adds a small amount of time to each appointment. Self-ligating braces skip that step, since the built-in clip simply opens and closes, which can make adjustment visits a bit quicker. That said, overall treatment length depends far more on the complexity of your bite than on which bracket system you choose. Most patients, regardless of bracket type, come in for adjustments roughly every four to eight weeks throughout treatment, with the exact interval set by Dr. Aliu based on how your case is progressing.

Any Downsides to Consider

Self-ligating brackets are generally a bit bulkier than traditional low-profile brackets, and while many patients don’t notice a meaningful difference, some may find the fit slightly less discreet. Traditional braces remain a proven, cost-effective option, especially for more complex cases where fine-tuned control over tooth movement matters most. Dr. Aliu will help you weigh these trade-offs against your specific case and priorities.

Neither option has a meaningful edge when it comes to final results for comparable cases — both are well-established, effective ways to move teeth. The decision really comes down to your priorities around comfort, cleaning, appointment length, and appearance rather than one being objectively more effective than the other.

Comparing the Two Side by Side

Feature Self-Ligating Traditional
Wire attachment Built-in sliding clip Elastic ties
Friction Lower Slightly higher
Cleaning ease Easier, fewer spots to trap debris Requires extra care around ties
Adjustment visits Typically quicker Slightly longer (ties replaced)
Bracket profile Slightly bulkier Lower profile
Style options Available in gold as well as silver Colored elastics available

What This Means for a Teen’s Day-to-Day Life

For a teenager balancing school, sports, and a social life, the practical differences between these two systems show up in small ways. Self-ligating brackets can mean shorter waits at adjustment appointments, which matters when squeezing a visit in between activities. They can also feel a bit smoother against the inside of the cheek for some patients. Traditional braces, on the other hand, give teens the fun of choosing new elastic colors at every visit — a small detail some teens genuinely enjoy as part of the experience. Neither factor should outweigh what’s actually best for your teen’s specific bite, but they’re worth knowing about when the choice between the two is otherwise close.

What About Cost Differences?

Self-ligating brackets are a more specialized bracket design, so they’re sometimes priced somewhat higher than traditional metal brackets, though the exact difference depends on your specific treatment plan. Traditional braces remain one of the most budget-friendly options available. Since case complexity affects price more than bracket type alone, the most accurate way to compare costs for your teen’s situation is a consultation with our team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is self-ligating always the better option?

Not necessarily — it’s a great fit for many patients, but traditional braces remain an excellent, proven choice, especially for more complex cases or patients who prefer a lower-profile bracket.

Do self-ligating braces really move teeth faster?

Not dramatically — overall treatment time depends much more on the complexity of your bite than the bracket type. Self-ligating braces may mean quicker individual appointments, but total treatment length is usually similar for comparable cases.

Can teens choose either option?

Yes, both self-ligating and traditional braces are available to teen patients at Elite Orthodontics, and Dr. Aliu can help your teen decide which fits their case and preferences best.

Are self-ligating braces more expensive?

Pricing can vary by appliance type and case, so it’s best to get specifics during a consultation with our team.

Which option is easier for playing sports?

Both hold up well with a properly fitted mouthguard. Neither self-ligating nor traditional braces are typically a barrier to playing sports, as long as appropriate protection is worn.

Do self-ligating braces come in any other styles besides gold?

Our self-ligating option is available in standard silver as well as gold, giving patients a bit of choice in how their appliance looks throughout treatment.

How do I decide which one is right for me?

Start with your priorities — comfort, cleaning ease, quicker appointments, or lower cost — and bring them up during your consultation. Dr. Aliu can tell you honestly which option best matches what matters most to you.

Will my teen need the same bracket type for their entire treatment?

In most cases, yes — the bracket type is typically set at the start of treatment and stays consistent throughout, since switching mid-treatment usually isn’t necessary for either option to work as intended.

Does either option affect how long retainers are needed afterward?

No — retention needs after treatment depend on your case and how your teeth respond, not on which bracket system was used to get there.

Can I request self-ligating brackets specifically, or is it up to the orthodontist?

You’re welcome to express a preference, and Dr. Aliu will let you know honestly whether self-ligating brackets are a good fit for your specific case before moving forward.
